Here's a great chance to
collect a rare horn and a great player in one inexpensive
package. During the 1930's the early "big box" retailer and
mail-order house Montgomery-Ward delved into the proessional
horn market seeking to offer really good horns at reasonable
prices. For this they contracted with the major American horn
makers to produce what are called "stencil" horns. The fact is,
however, that those makers only produced one quality of
instrument, good, and they put the same care into their stencil
horns.
This tenor example is silver plated and fits
the configuration of a Buescher Aristocrat Series I with some
small deviations. But, as the pictures wil show, it is quite a
beautiful instrument and can be shown with pride. Rumor was that
the manufacturers used the stencil horns to try out little
innovations before putting them on their brand name instruments
so you might find some nifty little ideas at play on this horn.
It has all the period bells and whistles,
gold wash inside the bell, left side B & Bb keys, keyed through
high F, etc. and sounds like the sweet, strong Buescher it is.
The horn currently plays ok on older pads. If
you want it to regain its full voice it could benefit from a
re-pad.
Ships in period case.
