Overhauls of vintage
saxophones at This Old Horn are performed by either our in-house
shop, an outside shop with whom we have a close and symbiotic
relationship or, in the case of Selmer horns, by Hollis &
Germann in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Jim Germann is renowned as
perhaps the finest Mark VI technician in the country and enjoys
that reputation with the tough and hard to satisfy New York
professional music crowd.
Jim personally overhauls our horns and the
resulting feel and perfect intonation we and our customers have
enjoyed make us happy and proud to label our Selmers as Germann
overhauled.
Our VINTAGE overhaul consists
of the following:
-
Complete strip down and chemical
cleaning of the body and bell.
-
Removal of any dents.
-
Re-fitting of the neck tenon as needed.
-
Complete re-fitting of the key work.
-
Straightening rods and correcting
the action as necessary.
-
Installation of new pads and original
resonators as appropriate to the instrument.
-
Installation of new corks using modern
materials and adhesives.
-
Re-assembly of the horn and extensive
test playing.
The thing that differentiates our
VINTAGE overhaul from others is that we use the correct
pads and resonators for the horn type to maintain the
originality of its sound. For example, all Conn horns are padded
with proper Conn Reso-Pads and resonators.
