Rob & Robin,
You have no idea what a great
pleasure it is for me to write you…
The two horns I recently
purchased from you continue to delight me. The Buescher
400 TH & C and 1928 True Tone, both play beautifully! And
the Dorsey mouthpieces work well on both horns.
As you know, I owned & played a
’49 Selmer SBA Tenor for many years, and I was never happy with
it. I tried many mouthpieces, reeds, adjustments, etc.,
and finally sold it back in the 80’s. Recently, I
discovered “This Old Horn” and decided to try playing again…
As I approach my 80th birthday,
I have much to celebrate! Not only reaching this
milestone, but two beautiful horns, and two new friends. I
treasure both…
Thank you!
Dick
(Dick is an example of what so often
happens with our customers. Bye the time we sell and ship their
instrument we have spent some time on the phone and just hit it
off. Since then Dick and I speak a couple of times a week and
have become good friends. The richness this brings to our lives
is something we never expected when we began the business but
has come to be an attribute we could never do without. We
treasure Dick and every customer we get to know, Rob & Robin

As professional musician with 30 years
experience, I have played a lot of horns. I received the
Vintage series Phil Barone tenor saxophone with Vintage Gold
Lacquer and was thrilled right out of the box. The horn
arrived in perfect condition, in a beautiful case, and was
able to be played right away. The quality of this instrument
was second to none! It sounded and performed equal, if not
better, than my Selmer or Yamaha. You are very
knowledgeable, and the communication was extremely helpful.
I have to admit, I was a little worried after ordering a
Taiwanese horn, but you assured me that I had nothing to
worry about. The horn came in a well designed case, and from
the first time i picked it up i could tell it was solidly
built. The finish reminded me of vintage horns of days gone
by. The sound was full,
deep, rich, and resonant with a solid
center that is slightly more spread. I would strongly
recommend this horn, you, and
ThisOldHorn.com
to everyone. Customers will NOT be disappointed.

Rob and Robin,
I would just like to say thank you
for helping us with the purchase of the Conn 10M Tenor
Saxaphone! My son loves it and it plays great. You folks
were professional and courteous from the first
conversation all the way to final delivery. I will not
hesitate to do business with you folks again!

Greetings Rob,
I wanted to send this message for a
permanent record of the excellent experience my wife,
Kristin and I had purchasing the 113xxx Selmer Mark VI from
you, Robin, and This Old Horn. As all are well aware,
purchasing a saxophone from a distance and via the internet
can be harrowing, but the horn and your service should allay
any fears that buyers may have. The horn, as you initially
told Kristin, is solid from top to bottom. The intonation
is excellent, the sound is pure Mark VI, and the engraving
and lacquer is top notch. It is also quite remarkable that
you sent the horn to Jim Germann at Hollis and Germann Music
for a deluxe Germann overhaul at no additional cost to us
after you identified a leak before shipping. The result is
outstanding, with all the special touches that only a
Germann overhaul can provide. I'm sure the horn would have
been a joy to play even with the initial slight leak, but
now it is exceptional. It will provide years of good
service before maintenance is required. It will be a
treasure to hopefully be passed on to my son some day. The
inclusion of the custom "This Old Horn" mouthpiece is
another wonderful bonus. It has the dark vintage Otto Link
sound with some nice additional projection. Actually I
prefer your term "presence" for the mouthpiece sound, which
is apt.
Again, thank you and Robin for all you've
done. I look forward to interactions in the future.

Rob
I got the alto. It
sounds great, and the work you did on it was excellent - I know
you went well beyond the price. I didn't have much time to play
on it yet, need to sand down the cork a bit, but anything that
needs adjustment is just a matter of the horn settling in and I
can make any of the adjustments myself.
Thanks again for
giving me such a great deal. Feel free to contact me about any
other Martins you come across. Also, do you sell vintage
mouthpieces? There's a couple I've been keeping my eyes out for.
Best, David

[Review of the sale of the '57 Buescher 400
-- June, 2010]
Rob,
Horn arrived safe and sound yesterday. Taking
it in for a few adjustments Friday. (Actually it and my
Buescher TH&C Alto have the same issue with the low C# key.)
It's a lot of fun. Makes my six feel closed and reserved. :-))
We've got a family circus going on here at the moment, I'll
leave the seven hundred star eBay feedback over the next few
days.
You're a joy to work with. Thank you. It's
always nerve wracking to buy a horn like this. You made the
experience easy.
Best regards,
MG

Hi Rob,
The horn [Buescher Big B] is magnificent, I'm
very happy with it. It's in much better condition than I
anticipated, and while tweaking is always possible, it is better
set up than the horn I've been using, and seems to have
travelled without mishap.
Apart from the obvious
differences in the build and tonal qualities of the mid 60s
buescher I've been using and this one, I was pleasantly
surprised by the difference in the quality of the cases too.
It's a minor thing I know, but apart from looking better, the
horn actually fits into it much better.
Thank you!

Hey Rob-
I
really do appreciate the horn and the deal you gave me
on it, as well as the whole buying experience- very
nicely done. Anyway, I still owe you an official
glowing testimonial, and I should have it out shortly.

March 2010
Rob, I want to thank you for the
conversation we had, and also thank you for the Phil Barone
Silver Tenor I bought from you. I had been doing research on
these and other Taiwan made horns, and quite frankly was a
little intrigued as well as skeptical of how one of these horns
would perform up against my other prized horn, a Keilwerth
Shadow, or my Yamaha Custom 82Z unlacquered Tenors.
When I spoke to you initially, you told me
how the horns tone compared to that of a Conn 10M, and was very
full and bright. i received the horn within 3 days of my
purchasing it, and like you said it would, the horn appeared to
me as brand new, though it was about 1.5 years old. The packing
was perfect, and all open keys were wedged. Now, the test... I
have to say I had some butterflies in my stomach in anticipation
of what would come out of the horn when I played my first note.
before doing so, I picked up my Yamaha Custom, and blew a few
notes I was accustomed to hearing and to make sure my reed was
ready to make an intelligent comparison when I tried the "new
horn". To make a long story short...when I reluctantly put the
horn away for the night 6 hours later, I could not wait to debut
it at my gig the next day! The horn played effortlessly from top
to bottom. Altissimo and harmonics were perfectly in tune all
the way up to G7. (as far as my reed would allow!).
This horn is made solid, and the finish is
impeccable, and the sound is fat, sexy, and perfectly in tune
all the way up and down. For whatever reason, I have never been
a "Selmer" guy, and that may just be because I haven't played
the right one, but I've owned a Reference 54, and Reference 36,
and sold them both when i played my Keilwerth the first time.
The feeling I got when I played this horn, rivaled that
Keilwerth moment, at 1/3 the price!
I'm now a believer, and I am seriously
considering another...just to have! I really enjoyed our
conversation, and I look forward to more in the future! Thank
you again... if anyone would like a referral, send them my way!
Sincerely Mark

Hey Rob-
Your great communication
throughout this was definitely reassuring- If I had gotten a
"shady" vibe at any point, I might have gotten more worked
up, but it's all good. Also, I wouldn't worry too much
about getting a tracking number anymore because the horn
just arrived early this morning!
The photos were definitely accurate, but
it still looks much better in real life! My mouthpiece (went
with the Rousseau you recommended with a Rovner light lig)
should be in sometime today, so hopefully I'll be able to
try it out after work. Maybe a lil during >: )
Anyway, I'll try it out let you know how
it plays (and send a proper, glowing testimonial) as soon as
I'm able.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!....!

Rob,
The tenor mouthpiece that you made
for me is great. It
has just the right amount of "buzz" but still has a low
end. I have played it about two hours. Right now I'm
getting used to the tip. I think, and I intend to keep
using it, that the tip could be opened a bit. Not much,
just a bit...
I think you have the right idea here.
It has many of the characteristics of the Meyer alto
mouthpiece you customized which is a good thing. We'll
talk soon. I want to continue to use this for a week or
so to make sure that I really like it.
As an aside, the intonation is also
good on this mouthpiece (at least for me).

Mr. Dorsey,
Thanks for beautiful sax.
It looks beautiful and in perfect condition as best as I could
tell. Everything you said it would be.
However, I
realized shortly after unpacking that I had a huge!!! brain
fart. I thought I was buying an alto sax! Your description was
fine; I just didn't realize that the sax was under the 'tenor
sax' section of ebay. All my fault.
With that said, if
interested, I would gladly ship it pack to you at my expense if
you are interested. Totally my fault. Maybe you even have a good
alto sax I might be interested. If not interested, I
understand. Please, however, do not be alarmed or irritated if
you see me listing this item on ebay. (I have never sold
anything on ebay, so not sure how easy it is, or what I would
get.)

Rob,
I have played my new Firebird tenor and
had my tech go over it and give his evaluation. The
conclusion from both of us is that the horn is well-made,
has good intonation, has a rich sound comparable to horns
costing much more. Additionally, both of you have
demonstrated excellent customer service. The combination of
a well-made product and total commitment to customer
satisfaction is a winning combination that many companies
don't practice. I'm very pleased.
Here is some background about my tech.
He is a professional woodwind player (sax, clarinet, oboe)
who has repaired horns for 40 years. He recently
semi-retired to Florida from New York where he now plays in
various bands, does a little teaching, and repairs horns on
the side. He plays Taiwan-made horns exclusively.
Now, for the rest of the evaluation:
Rose brass vs standard brass. As a
concert sax player I strive for a more mellow tone.
Projection is not an issue. Being able to play subtones in
the lower register is more important. I'm not sure that
changing the type of brass will make that much difference in
the tone. Using a different mouthpiece or reed should have
more effect. Having said that I do think a rose brass horn
is gorgeous.
Octave pin at the top of the horn. The
pin that opens the octave pip on the neck is much longer
than others I have seen. It is longer because the octave
mechanism sits higher on the neck. That pin extends well
above the top of the barrel making it more susceptable to
being damaged. There doesn't seem to be a need for the pin
to extend that far up. Perhaps that can be corrected in the
next shipment of horns.
Front high F key. Ingenious design. I
can press down or to the side to activate that key. Kudos.
Left hand palm keys. The placement of
these keys is slightly different than what I'm used to. The
D key is closer to the barrel and the F key is lower down
the barrel. I can get used to these but maybe you can offer
adjustable palm keys like Kielworth for those of us with big
hands.
Another marketing idea: Offer roo pads
for a slightly higher price.
That's my two cents worth. I hope some
of my comments are useful to you.

just to let you know that the Mk VI
arrived safely and it plays like a dream.
Thank you very much for steering this one
my way.
All best wishes

(From a customer who came
here to pick out his horn.)
Rob:
You know, I had a total
blast yesterday. Just incredible!
Of course the ride took
longer going home but I made it in by 10:00PM. Can't wait
to play the sax more today but work must come first right?
I know tomorrow night I will play it for about 3 hours at
the gig...oh yeah!
